Plane Crash Investigation Underway After Learjet Crash in Florida
GREENACRES, FL — A Learjet crashed on October 8, 2023, killing all nine individuals aboard after encountering severe weather.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation into the crash, which occurred shortly after the aircraft, bound for the Bahamas, reportedly struggled to navigate turbulent conditions. Authorities confirmed that the crash site created a large crater, indicating the plane broke apart before impact.
Investigation teams are combing the wreckage for evidence, including parts of the plane found over a mile away from the main impact site. The NTSB is particularly focused on locating the cockpit voice recorder, which could shed light on the pilots' final communications as they faced turbulence and lost control of the aircraft.
The co-pilot communicated with air traffic controllers about severe altitude fluctuations, but it remains unclear why the jet did not reroute around the storm. Heavy rainfall in recent days has complicated recovery efforts, as the crater has filled with water, potentially obscuring some debris.
A preliminary report on the incident is expected to be released within 30 days, outlining the facts of the crash without delving into causes. The NTSB noted the investigation may take up to 18 months to complete, examining flight records, weather data, and maintenance logs from Upper Jets, the flight operator.
The investigation will also review air traffic control interactions and seek additional evidence from bystanders, including videos and possible surveillance footage of the incident.
