INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Three suspects fled on foot after crashing a stolen vehicle following a shooting investigation on Thursday afternoon.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), officers located the stolen vehicle at 12:45 p.m. near East 38th Street and Post Road. A detective attempted a traffic stop, prompting the vehicle to flee westbound before crashing near Whenner Drive. The specific type of vehicle involved has not been disclosed.
Three individuals from the crashed vehicle fled the scene heading southwest. IMPD, with assistance from the Indiana State Police, Lawrence Police Department, and the Marion County Sheriff's Office, established a perimeter and utilized a helicopter, special tactics team, and police dogs to search for the suspects, but they were not located.
The stolen vehicle was linked to an earlier shooting, resulting in a temporary lockdown of a nearby child care center. IMPD stated that the crash was unrelated to another shooting reported at a gas station on West 38th and Meridian streets at 12:35 p.m. on the same day.
A firearm was recovered from the abandoned vehicle. One man who was detained at the scene was released after authorities determined he was not involved in the incident.
The lockdown at the child care center has since been lifted.
