STUART, Fla. (CBS12) — An 18-year-old high school senior died in a vehicle crash just hours before his graduation practice on Thursday morning.
According to the Martin County Sheriff's Office, Christopher Brooks of Hobe Sound was driving northbound on SW Pratt Whitney Road when he failed to stop for trucks ahead of him and rear-ended a dump truck near SW Bulldog Way. Emergency responders arrived shortly after 8:58 a.m. but were unable to revive him.
Witnesses reported seeing the collision and a student described the moment as shocking. “A lady was out here crying; it was just pretty sad,” said Bernard Blackshire, a truck driver who witnessed the aftermath.
Sheriff Jon Budensiek stated that at this time, it is unclear how fast Brooks was traveling or if he was wearing a seatbelt, but distractions may have played a role in the incident. His grandparents were present at the scene.
Jennifer DeShazo, Chief of Staff for the Martin County School District, expressed the community's grief, emphasizing the tragedy's profound impact on students and families. She confirmed that the graduation ceremony scheduled for 7 p.m. would continue but with a somber tone.
The Florida Highway Patrol is taking over the investigation, and further details are pending. No other injuries or vehicles were reported in connection with the accident.
