STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. (WJLA) — Five people died and dozens were injured in a multi-vehicle crash on I-95 southbound early Friday morning in Stafford County, Virginia.
According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the incident occurred near mile marker 146, approximately two miles south of Exit 148 for Quantico.
The crash transpired around 2:35 a.m. as traffic was slowing for an upcoming work zone, Virginia State Police said.
Police reported that a bus failed to slow and collided with six vehicles.
Officials confirmed five fatalities among the occupants of the impacted vehicles, with 34 individuals transported to local hospitals. Three are in critical condition.
A Stafford County Fire and Rescue spokesperson stated one injured person was flown to a hospital, while the others were taken to various local facilities via ambulance.
As of 10 a.m., two lanes of I-95 southbound remain open at mile marker 146. Travelers are advised to choose alternate routes to avoid delays, with detours lifted at Exit 148 (Quantico).
Authorities confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and charges are pending.
