STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. (WJLA) — Five people are dead and dozens injured following a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 southbound early Friday morning.
According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the accident occurred near mile marker 146, about two miles south of Exit 148 for Quantico, at approximately 2:35 a.m. Traffic was slowing ahead of an upcoming work zone when a bus failed to brake, colliding with six vehicles.
Officials confirmed five fatalities among the occupants of the struck vehicles. A total of 34 people were taken to local hospitals, with three reported to have critical injuries. One individual was flown to a hospital, while the remaining victims were transported via ambulance.
As of 10 a.m., two lanes of I-95 southbound are open at mile marker 146. Travelers are urged to use alternate routes to avoid delays; the detour at Exit 148 (Quantico) has been lifted.
Authorities stated that the crash is under active investigation, and charges are pending.
