Fiery crash injures officer; driver faces multiple felony charges.

MADISON, WI – A 36-year-old man faces multiple criminal charges following a violent crash that a Madison police officer, according to authorities.

Christopher Brugger Jr. was charged on Friday with offenses including first-degree recklessly endangering safety, fleeing an officer causing bodily harm, and operating while intoxicated. He faces a total of 12 felony charges and 30 traffic citations.

On September 27, Monona police received reports of a reckless tow truck driver on Highway 51. The truck allegedly nearly collided with several vehicles. Officers initiated a pursuit that lasted nearly six miles and involved high speeds and multiple traffic violations.

The chase concluded on Terminal Drive near McFarland when Brugger's truck swerved into oncoming traffic, colliding with a Madison police squad car, resulting in a fiery crash. Officer Ryan Kimberley suffered severe injuries, including multiple fractures and a bruised lung. He has undergone five surgeries and faces uncertainty regarding his ability to return to work.

After the crash, Brugger attempted to flee but was apprehended following a struggle with officers. He displayed signs of intoxication, and blood tests are pending, while substances discarded during the incident tested positive for methamphetamine.

Brugger's sister reported that he took the tow truck and its cargo from her without permission. At the time of the incident, records indicated he had outstanding warrants and a revoked license.

A bail of $200,000 was set, with Brugger prohibited from driving or contacting Officer Kimberley. His next court hearing is scheduled for October 28.
