TULSA, Okla. (WKRC) – An Oklahoma father was sentenced to five years in prison Monday for a January 2024 crash that killed his 16-year-old daughter.

Elliott Binney, who pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and other charges, is also slated to serve five years of probation. The incident occurred on January 11 when Binney lost control of a vehicle carrying family members, resulting in multiple rollovers.

According to investigators, Shelby Binney was found critically injured after being from the vehicle and later succumbed to her injuries. Authorities confirmed that several juvenile passengers were involved in the crash.

Witnesses reported that the vehicle was traveling at a high speed in rainy conditions and passing other vehicles in a no-passing zone minutes before the accident. An open bottle of vodka was discovered near the scene, and Binney admitted to drinking from it while driving.

After the crash, Binney fled on foot and was later apprehended approximately 40 miles away in Checotah. Despite the evidence of alcohol consumption, prosecutors indicated there was insufficient proof to demonstrate that he was legally impaired at the time of the crash.

Tulsa County District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler emphasized that Binney's actions after the crash led to his prison sentence.
