OAK PARK, Ill. (WBBM/CNN Newsource) – A driver died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after causing a chain-reaction crash that injured 14 people on April 3.
Authorities said the driver ran a red light at approximately 9:30 a.m., swerving to avoid a pedestrian before colliding with multiple vehicles, including a bus.
Of the 14 injured, 11 were transported to nearby hospitals, while three received treatment at the scene. None of the injuries were reported as serious.
Witnesses reported that after the crash, bystanders approached the driver, identified as 48-year-old Thomas Cremeens. While walking away from his vehicle, a gunshot was heard, and authorities later confirmed that Cremeens had taken his own life.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with police evaluating evidence and gathering statements from witnesses. Traffic was affected in the area due to lane closures following the crash.
