EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A 19-year-old woman faces felony charges following a fatal hit-and-run crash in northwest El Paso on Monday night.
Ambar Chavira is charged with collision involving death and was released on bond Tuesday. The incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. in the 6300 block of North Desert Boulevard, where Chavira, driving a silver 2016 BMW 428i, rear-ended another vehicle, leading to a four-car chain-reaction.
Jaime Andrade, 56, the driver of one of the vehicles, later died from his injuries at University Medical Center. Witnesses reported a chaotic scene, noting that another vehicle struck the wreckage shortly after the initial crash. Authorities stated that Chavira fled the scene on foot without offering aid.
Officers traced Chavira to a residence on Rosa Gandara Drive, where they observed signs of intoxication. According to the police affidavit, she admitted to drinking multiple alcoholic beverages at a local bar before attempting to drive home and acknowledged her flight from the scene.
The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission is investigating whether the bar violated state law by serving alcohol to Chavira. The incident has reignited calls for legislative reform from the Sober Streets Movement, which advocates against impaired driving.
The case remains under investigation by El Paso Police.
