SUCIA ISLAND, Wash. (KOMO) — Emergency personnel responded Thursday afternoon after a Kenmore Air seaplane crashed into the water near Sucia Island in San Juan County.
According to Kenmore Air, the de Havilland DHC-3 Otter, Flight 140, departed Lake Union, Seattle, around 4:30 p.m., heading for Roche Harbor on San Juan Island. The accident occurred at approximately 5:15 p.m. with 10 passengers and one pilot on board.
Orcas Island Fire & Rescue confirmed all individuals on the aircraft were rescued and receiving medical attention. Two injured passengers were transported to a hospital in Bellingham, while two others were taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Seven additional passengers were evaluated at a U.S. Coast Guard base.
San Juan County Sheriff Eric Peter indicated one passenger was in critical condition. Emergency responders included:

Sheriff Peter highlighted the urgent response from multiple agencies and nearby civilians to ensure everyone was rescued.
Kenmore Air activated its emergency procedures and is collaborating with the U.S. Coast Guard and local responders. The airline is not speculating on the cause of the incident. CEO David Gudgel expressed gratitude that everyone has been accounted for and emphasized the airline's commitment to passenger care.
The cause of the accident is under investigation, and all flights were canceled Friday to focus on support efforts for those affected.
