SCOTT COUNTY, Ky. (LEX NEWS) — Two individuals were killed and two others injured in a collision involving a fire truck on I-75 on Saturday, July 11, around 2:30 p.m.
The accident occurred while Engine 6 crew members were assisting with an earlier car crash on the highway's shoulder. According to the Scott County Fire Department, as firefighters returned to their engine, a vehicle rear-ended them.
Witnesses reported the chaos as firefighters quickly called for additional support. “We need the highway shut down… We've got extreme injuries, one is unconscious. We're going to need at least three ambulances at this location, 141 southbound,” one firefighter stated over the radio following the collision.
Kentucky State Police identified the victims as Shauna and Darren Nelson, who lost control of their vehicle on the rainy roadway before colliding with the fire truck. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Two passengers in the Nelsons' vehicle suffered serious injuries and were transported to local hospitals. Three firefighters sustained minor injuries and are currently recovering.
Kentucky State Police are continuing their investigation into the incident. No further information has been released at this time.
