Chief Arrested After Crash in Downtown Springfield
SPRINGFIELD, Oct. 10 — A local fire chief was arrested following a multi-vehicle collision that occurred at 2:41 p.m. at the intersection of Main Street and Elm Avenue.
According to the Springfield Police Department, three vehicles were involved in the crash. Two people sustained injuries and were transported to Springfield General Hospital for treatment. Their conditions are currently unknown.
Witnesses reported that the chief, aged 45, was allegedly driving under the influence at the time of the incident. Authorities said he failed a sobriety test at the scene and was taken into custody without incident.
Emergency responders from the Springfield Fire Department were on-site to assist with medical aid and traffic control. The eastbound lanes of Main Street were temporarily closed for more than an hour while crews cleared the scene and investigated the circumstances surrounding the accident.
A tow truck was called to remove the vehicles involved, and the investigation is ongoing. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
