Million Dollar Highway Closed for Vehicle Recovery Following Crash
OURAY COUNTY, Colo. — A section of US 550, known as the Million Dollar Highway, will close Thursday afternoon to recover a vehicle involved in a crash near Red Mountain Pass.
According to the Ouray County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m. around milemarker 88, south of Ouray, close to a snowshed designed to mitigate avalanche risks.
Southbound lanes were initially closed at the intersection with County Road 361 (Camp Bird Road) but reopened around 2:45 p.m. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) announced a second closure about an hour later for recovery efforts.
No injuries were reported, and authorities have not disclosed additional details about the vehicle or circumstances surrounding the crash.
This summer, a separate incident near milemarker 88 resulted in two adult fatalities and the rescue of a juvenile after a vehicle rolled down a mountain.
Further updates will follow as the situation develops.
