Crash debris found in Potomac River seven months later

Man Discovers Possible Airplane Seat in Potomac River

A man walking his dog along the Potomac River in Alexandria on Saturday reported finding what appeared to be an airplane seat in the water. This discovery comes over seven months after the January 29 crash of an American Airlines passenger jet and Army helicopter, which resulted in the deaths of all aboard.

Andrew Guevara noticed the unusual object while walking. “It looked extremely peculiar,” he stated, describing the seat with a visible tray table knob, located on the shoreline.

Following his instincts, Guevara researched American Airlines seats and recognized the red and blue color scheme. He recalled the January crash and felt compelled to report his find, despite initial uncertainty about who to contact.

According to authorities, Alexandria police responded and secured the seat. It has since been transferred to D.C. police for examination, who confirmed it will be sent to the National Transportation Safety Board for verification of its origin. American Airlines and the NTSB did not respond to inquiries at this time.

Guevara expressed that the discovery was surreal and shocking, given the tragedy associated with it. “I think it was important to get it to the right people,” he noted, emphasizing his hope to assist further if necessary.

The investigation into the discovered item continues, but no further details have been released at this time.
