COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — The Circleville community is mourning the death of 16-year-old Drace Johnson, who died in a car crash over the weekend.
Johnson was remembered at a Circleville High School volleyball game on Thursday night, where attendees wore green in tribute to his status as an organ donor. A moment of silence was observed prior to the match, reflecting the community's shared grief.
As a passenger in the crash, Johnson was described by friends as energetic and uplifting. His friends noted that his organ donations have reportedly saved eight lives, continuing to make an impact after his passing.
“This tragic situation shows the bright side,” said friend Auri Travis. “Drace was a great person, and he will continue to be for others.”
Photos of Johnson now adorn the halls of Circleville High, where he was a wrestling team member. The school district stated he was a beloved presence and his loss is deeply felt.
In downtown Circleville, Circleville Nutrition honored Johnson by creating a drink in his favorite color, blue, donating proceeds to his family. The event drew significant community support, with hundreds participating.
Alexis Kidwell from Circleville Nutrition noted, “It was the biggest fundraiser we've done since 2018.”
Community members emphasized their solidarity during this difficult time. More tributes are planned for Friday, with students encouraged to wear blue to school and the evening football game in Johnson's memory.
