Chalmette Man Killed in Late-Night Bicycle Crash on LA 46
A 34-year-old Chalmette man died after a pickup truck struck his motorized bicycle on LA Highway 46 shortly after 11 p.m. on August 18.
According to Louisiana State Police, the incident occurred near Chevron Plant Road. The victim, identified as Jonathan Spino, was traveling east on a motorized bicycle with a wagon in tow when a 2001 Ford F-250, also headed east, collided with him.
Investigators have not confirmed the cause of the crash. Notably, neither the bicycle nor the wagon was equipped with lights or reflective tape. Spino was not wearing a helmet at the time and sustained fatal injuries, being pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck was properly restrained and sustained no injuries.
Authorities do not believe impairment contributed to the accident. Routine toxicology samples have been collected for analysis as investigations continue.
State Police emphasized that bicycles are considered vehicles under Louisiana law, urging riders to comply with traffic regulations, use required lighting when riding at night, and wear reflective clothing to enhance visibility.
