MALDEN, MA – A car crashed into the Santa Fe Burrito Grill and Bar on Pleasant Street Wednesday morning, causing significant damage but no injuries.
Authorities responded to the incident shortly after the restaurant opened. According to Deputy Chief Keith Buchanan, an elderly woman accidentally pressed the wrong pedal while attempting to parallel park, causing the vehicle to crash through the entrance. The road is currently closed between Abbott and Commercial streets as crews manage the cleanup.
The vehicle penetrated the building about halfway, demolishing most of the front door and façade. “The glass window above was just hanging by one of the posts, weighing about 400 or 500 pounds, making it a dangerous situation,” Buchanan stated.
Fire and police crews were dispatched to ensure safety and assist in managing the scene. No injuries were reported; however, Buchanan noted the incident occurred in a busy area with nearby businesses and an MBTA station. He remarked, “It's very fortunate that nobody was walking by at that time.”
A towing service was called to remove the vehicle, and authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Lane closures are expected to remain in place until cleanup is completed.
