Mansfield Crash Claims Life of UConn Senior

MANSFIELD, CT — A 22-year-old UConn senior died following a crash on Hunting Lodge Road early Tuesday morning, Connecticut State Police reported.

According to authorities, Zachary Barry of Scarborough, Maine, was driving westbound at approximately 12:21 a.m. when his vehicle crossed into the eastbound lane and collided with a tree. Barry was extricated from the wreckage and transported to Hartford Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was at 2:43 a.m. on Wednesday.

Barry was studying plant science with a focus on turfgrass science at UConn, having joined the university community in fall 2022. He was a member of the men's track and field team and participated actively in the Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity. Last summer, he interned at Pine Valley Golf Club in New Jersey.

UConn Dean of Students Fany DeJesús Hannon extended condolences to Barry's family and friends, stating, “This is a challenging time for the UConn community. Support is available.” Condolences can be sent to the Dean of Students Office at 233 Glenbrook Road, Unit-4062 in Storrs.
