BUTTE — A Butte woman is seeking restitution nearly two years after a drunk driver crashed into her truck while she was home asleep.
Annissa Hastie, 62, reported hearing a loud bang at 1:36 a.m. on July 11, 2024, when a driver, traveling over 80 mph, collided with her truck and multiple other vehicles on her street. According to authorities, the vehicle came to a stop on a sidewalk in front of a nearby apartment complex.
The driver has been charged with several misdemeanors and is currently in DUI court. “The officer said the only thing that saved those girls from him driving through that apartment complex was the impact on my truck,” Hastie said.
Hastie indicated that her truck was totaled in the incident, leaving her reliant on a borrowed vehicle while waiting for restitution. She described the compensation situation as complicated, stating that multiple vehicles were damaged and that the insurance available is insufficient to cover the losses.
As a single grandmother on disability, Hastie cares for five children and her elderly mother. She expressed frustration about being without a reliable vehicle, as it affects her ability to attend medical appointments and fulfill caregiving responsibilities.
Hastie is speaking out in hopes of securing restitution and preventing similar situations for others. “If it protects one other person, that's what matters to me,” she said.
