EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — A 19-year-old woman faces charges following a fatal hit-and-run crash in northwest El Paso on Monday night.
Authorities identified Ambar Chavira as the suspect in the incident that occurred around 9:15 p.m. in the 6300 block of North Desert Boulevard. Chavira, driving a silver 2016 BMW 428i, rear-ended a vehicle, causing a four-car collision. Jaime Andrade, 56, driving a Subaru Outback, died from injuries sustained in the crash at University Medical Center.
Witnesses reported seeing additional vehicles collide with the wreckage after the initial crash. Chavira allegedly fled the scene on foot without offering aid, prompting her mother to contact police, according to the affidavit.
Officers located Chavira at a residence on Rosa Gandara Drive, where she displayed signs of intoxication. Authorities reported she admitted to consuming multiple alcoholic beverages at a local bar before driving. According to the affidavit, she acknowledged leaving the crash site despite being advised to remain and call 911.
The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission is investigating whether the bar served alcohol unlawfully, given Chavira's age. The incident has prompted calls for legislative reform from the Sober Streets Movement, advocating for increased penalties for impaired driving.
Chavira faces a felony charge of collision involving death and was released on bond Tuesday. The case remains under investigation by El Paso police.
