Five were killed and 34 taken to hospitals after a crash early Friday on I-95 southbound near mile marker 146 in Stafford County, Virginia.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, the crash occurred near mile marker 146, about 2 miles south of Exit 148 (Quantico).

Virginia State Police said traffic was slowing ahead of a work zone around 2:35 a.m. when a failed to slow and struck six vehicles.

Officials confirmed five fatalities among occupants of the vehicles hit by the bus.

Authorities said 34 people were transported to area hospitals, with three in critical condition.

Stafford County Fire and Rescue said one injured person was flown to a hospital; others were taken by ambulance to multiple local facilities.

As of 10 a.m., two southbound lanes of I-95 were open at mile marker 146, and the detour at Exit 148 was lifted, officials said.

State Police said the crash remains under investigation and that charges are pending.
