GREENFIELD, MA — A family of four from Massachusetts died in a multi-vehicle crash involving a bus on Interstate 95 in Stafford County, Virginia, early Friday morning.
Authorities reported the incident occurred around 2:35 a.m. when a motorcoach struck a Chevrolet Suburban, which then collided with an Acura carrying the Doncev family. Dmitri Doncev, 45; Ecaterina Doncev, 44; and their two children, ages 17 and 12, were confirmed deceased. A fifth victim, 25-year-old Priscilla Mafalda of Worcester, Massachusetts, also died in the collision.
Multiple individuals sustained injuries, with at least one in critical condition. Most injured parties were treated and discharged at Mary Washington Healthcare.
Virginia State Police have charged the bus driver, Jing S. Dong, 48, of Staten Island, New York, with two counts of involuntary manslaughter. It remains unclear if he is in custody or has retained legal representation.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is conducting an investigation into the crash, separate from state police efforts. Initial findings indicate the bus was traveling at a high rate of speed, with indications of little to no braking prior to impact.
The bus, operated by E&P Travel Inc. of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, was transporting passengers from New York to North Carolina. NTSB officials noted that Dong's English proficiency will be part of the investigation.
The Doncev family was reportedly traveling to a wedding in South Carolina, with homemade desserts prepared by Ecaterina. They emigrated from Moldova in 2008, settling in Greenfield, Massachusetts.
