STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. (WJLA) — Five people are dead and dozens are injured after a multi-vehicle crash early Friday morning on Interstate 95 southbound in Stafford County, Virginia.
According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the crash occurred near mile marker 146, approximately two miles south of Exit 148 for Quantico at around 2:35 a.m. Traffic was reportedly slowing ahead of a work zone when a bus failed to reduce speed and collided with six vehicles.
Officials confirmed the fatalities involved occupants of the struck vehicles. A total of 34 individuals were transported to area hospitals, with three reported in critical condition. One victim was airlifted to a hospital, while others were taken to several local facilities via ambulance, according to Stafford County Fire and Rescue.
As of 10 a.m., two lanes of I-95 southbound remain open at mile marker 146. Motorists are advised to take alternate routes to avoid delays, with the detour lifted at Exit 148.
Authorities stated the incident is under active investigation, and charges are pending.
