Bicyclist Recovering After in Madison

MADISON (WKOW) — A 70-year-old man is recovering from serious injuries following a hit-and-run crash on October 1 at the intersection of Regent Street and Monroe Street, near Camp Randall.

According to Allen Clauss, he was knocked unconscious while riding his recumbent bike when a vehicle made an illegal left turn onto Regent Street. The driver fled the scene immediately after the collision.

Clauss sustained 19 rib fractures, a broken right collarbone, and minor cuts. After spending over two weeks in the trauma care unit at UW Hospital, he has since returned home. “There's a lot of pain, but it's been generally manageable with pain relievers,” Clauss said.

Nearly three weeks post-accident, Madison Police identified a suspect believed to be driving the car involved. Authorities stated charges would be referred to the Dane County District Attorney's Office.

Clauss praised the first responders from the Madison Fire Department for their life-saving efforts. Despite the incident, he remains optimistic about cycling in Madison, emphasizing the community's commitment to safe road sharing. “I can't wait to get back out on my new bike,” he remarked.
