Bicyclist Killed in Crash on U.S. Highway 280 in Lee County
LEE COUNTY, Ala. (WAKA) – A bicyclist was struck and killed early Monday morning on U.S. Highway 280, approximately five miles east of Opelika.
According to Alabama State Troopers, the incident occurred at 4:30 a.m. on July 27. The victim, 30-year-old Samuel Rybar, originally from Slovakia, was riding his bicycle when he was hit from behind by a van driven by 36-year-old Jay Sexton of Opelika.
Troopers reported that Rybar was thrown from his bicycle and pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency responders arrived promptly; however, there were no additional injuries reported.
Authorities have confirmed that the crash remains under investigation. Further details regarding lane closures or tows were not immediately available.
