Pedestrian After Collision with Cyclist in Boston

BOSTON, MA — A young woman is recovering in the hospital after being struck by a bicyclist while crossing Commonwealth Avenue near Boston University on Tuesday.

Authorities initially reported that her injuries were life-threatening, but updated her condition on Wednesday, stating she is expected to survive. The incident has heightened concerns regarding safety between pedestrians and cyclists in the area.

Witnesses reported that the intersection at Commonwealth Avenue and St. Mary Street is particularly busy, with one student noting the aggressive cycling behavior observed there. “As a pedestrian, you have to avoid them a lot of the time,” the student said.

The bicyclist also sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital. Mayor Michelle Wu confirmed that the investigation into the accident is ongoing, but no charges have been announced as of yet. “It's really important that we have clear ways for everyone to be safe as they're getting around,” Wu stated.

Brendan Kearney from WalkMassachusetts highlighted broader safety concerns, pointing out that over 350 motor vehicle crashes occurred last year, with more than 20% involving pedestrians. He referenced a previous incident involving a pedestrian and an e-bike last August.

Emergency services responded promptly, with lane closures reported following the incident. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
