Train Collision in Urda, Spain, Leaves 68 Dead, Dozens Injured

URDA, Spain (Oct. 28, 2026) — A high-speed train collision in Urda has resulted in at least 68 fatalities and multiple injuries, according to regional authorities.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:53 a.m. when a RENFE train collided with the rear of a stopped IRYO train on a stretch of track between Madrid and Seville. A total of 397 passengers were aboard the RENFE train, while 147 were on the IRYO train.

Emergency services have reported that 58 individuals are receiving medical treatment, with several in critical condition. Rescue operations continued throughout the day, with recovery efforts involving ambulances and medical helicopters.

Authorities confirmed the trains were traveling southbound when the RENFE train struck the IRYO train, causing several carriages to derail. Witness accounts describe a chaotic scene, with debris scattered across the site and injured passengers attempting to escape through windows.

Spain's Transport Minister Óscar Puente stated that the train's security system failed prior to the incident, leading to what he termed an “inexplicable” decision by a central command center to allow the RENFE train to proceed despite a stop signal.

Rail services have been halted in the affected area, with a military emergency brigade deployed to assist with recovery. Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced three days of national mourning and urged for increased safety measures within the rail system.

This collision represents the second major train accident in Spain this year, following another crash in January that claimed 46 lives. Investigations into the causes and circumstances surrounding both tragedies are ongoing.
