A loose semitrailer tire crossed lanes on Interstate 70 near Miller Avenue Friday afternoon in Columbus, striking three cars and killing one driver.

According to the Columbus Division of Police, a left rear trailer tire detached from a semitrailer traveling westbound on I-70 and entered the eastbound lanes, hitting three passenger vehicles.

Authorities said a Taurus was struck, and the driver died at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

The crash closed I-70 eastbound to I-71 northbound and I-70 at State Route 315 for several hours Friday evening, police said.

Columbus Police and medics responded. The victim's name has not been released, and the trucking company has not been identified.

The Accident Investigation Unit is investigating. Authorities said it remains unclear whether the truck driver realized the tire detached or stopped after the incident.
