HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A 56-year-old Gainesville woman died in a four-vehicle crash on Interstate 75 on Saturday morning, authorities said.
According to Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the victim was driving a Hyundai Sonata southbound at approximately 11:25 a.m. when she shifted into the center lane and collided with a Mazda 6 operated by a 30-year-old woman from New York.
The collision caused the Sonata to veer into the median, strike a guardrail, overturn, and enter the northbound lanes.
While in the northbound lanes, the Sonata struck a Kia Sorento driven by a 57-year-old woman from Riverview. The Sonata eventually came to rest atop the guardrail.
A 72-year-old woman from Maryland was driving a Honda Civic that was impacted by debris from the incident.
The driver of the Sonata was pronounced dead at the scene. The Sorento driver sustained minor injuries; no other injuries were reported, according to the FHP.
The crash led to a closure of the northbound lanes of I-75 until 5 p.m. as crews worked to clear the scene.
