TITUSVILLE, Fla. (Oct. 9, 2023) – A police chief was fired after refusing an alcohol test following an off-duty crash in a city-owned vehicle late Saturday night.

The incident occurred around 11:15 p.m. near River Oaks Drive and Barna Avenue, just outside city limits. Officers discovered a partially consumed bottle of vodka in now-former Chief John Lau's . Authorities noted that Lau exhibited bloodshot eyes and the odor of alcohol was detected at the scene.

After the crash, Lau was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. Once there, an officer requested that he undergo alcohol testing, which Lau refused, violating city personnel policy. As a result, he was discharged from the hospital and subsequently fired by the city manager the following day.

Interim Police Chief Tyler Wright stated, “This is an extremely unfortunate and avoidable incident. Thankfully, no other innocent parties were involved, and no serious injuries were sustained. This incident does not reflect the values of this department.”

The Florida Highway Patrol has taken over the investigation since the crash occurred outside Titusville's jurisdiction. Authorities confirmed that no criminal charges would be filed against Lau, though details on their decision have not been disclosed.

Lau had been serving as the police chief since 2013.
