TITUSVILLE, Fla. (CNN Newsource/WESH/WKRC) — A Titusville police chief was fired after refusing an alcohol test following an off-duty crash in a city-owned vehicle.

The incident occurred around 11:15 p.m. near River Oaks Drive and Barna Avenue, just outside city limits. Officers discovered a “partially consumed” bottle of vodka in John Lau's after the crash.

Authorities reported that Lau sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. While there, he was requested to submit to alcohol testing but refused, violating city personnel policy.

After being discharged the next day, Lau was fired by the city manager. Interim Police Chief Tyler Wright stated, “This is an extremely unfortunate and avoidable incident. Thankfully, no other innocent parties were involved, and no serious injuries were sustained.”

Witnesses noted the smell of alcohol on Lau, with one officer commenting on his bloodshot eyes. Law enforcement indicated that Lau had been drinking prior to the crash.

Since the incident occurred outside of Titusville's jurisdiction, the Florida Highway Patrol took over the investigation. No criminal charges were filed against Lau, with the patrol not yet responding to inquiries about their decision.

Lau had served as police chief since 2013.
