LEWES, DE – A accident on Savannah Road occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. on June 28, injuring several individuals.

According to authorities, Sen. Chris Coons was a passenger in one of the vehicles involved. He sustained minor injuries and was treated at Beebe Healthcare. A statement from his office confirmed he is recovering well at home.

The incident began when the driver of a pickup truck experienced a medical emergency while traveling toward the beach, causing the vehicle to collide with multiple cars before it veered into a nearby front yard.

Witnesses reported hearing two impacts prior to the crash. Charlie Atwell, who lives at the corner of Savannah Road and Massachusetts Avenue, noted that the quick response from first responders, including the Lewes Police Department and Sussex County Emergency Medical Services, was commendable. Atwell stated that despite the chaos, no one was struck by debris, and there appeared to be no significant structural damage to his home.

Police Chief Tom Spell confirmed that five to six people were taken to Beebe for treatment. The driver of the pickup truck is believed to have temporarily lost consciousness due to a medical condition, and authorities reported he suffered a few broken ribs.

Atwell, who recently attended a Delaware Department of Transportation workshop on safety improvements for the intersection, emphasized that the speed limit on Savannah Road should be examined, although he recognized this incident stemmed from a medical emergency. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
