KATY, Texas (TNND) — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated an investigation into a crash involving a Tesla Model 3 that struck a home, killing a 76-year-old woman.
Authorities confirmed that the driver reported using Tesla's driver-assistance technology at the time of the incident. Harris County officials identified the deceased as Martha Avila. The driver displayed no signs of impairment and is cooperating with investigators.
Witnesses noted that the Tesla reportedly achieved a speed of 73 mph prior to impact, with the driver manually overriding the system by fully depressing the accelerator. Tesla executives, including CEO Elon Musk, have disputed claims that the automated driving system caused the crash, emphasizing its intended operation at reduced speeds in residential areas.
The NHTSA has opened 46 investigations into Tesla vehicles utilizing self-driving technology over the last decade, with several resulting in fatalities. Tesla's Full Self-Driving system requires constant driver attention and does not render the vehicle fully autonomous.
Emergency crews responded promptly, and initial reports indicate the vehicle crashed into the home's front room, leaving a significant hole and debris across the lawn. Lane closures are expected as the investigation and cleanup continue.
