Man Charged with Murder After Fatal Carjacking Incident in Mattapan
BOSTON, MA—A 37-year-old man faces murder charges following a fatal carjacking incident on Blue Hill Avenue Saturday, Boston police confirmed.
Ibraim Matos, of Hyde Park, was arrested after allegedly stealing a vehicle and fatally striking a pedestrian. According to authorities, Matos was involved in a collision at Woodhaven and Blue Hill Avenue before exiting his damaged car. He reportedly pulled another driver from her vehicle near 1480 Blue Hill Avenue and fled the scene.
Authorities said Matos drove the stolen vehicle wrong-way towards Mattapan Square, hitting a pedestrian on the sidewalk. The victim has not been publicly identified. Matos was arrested after crashing into multiple vehicles, including a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) bus, and was subdued by witnesses prior to police arrival.
Matos has been charged with murder, carjacking, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in personal injury. The road was closed for several hours but has since reopened.
In a related incident, Robert Monestime, 21, of Braintree, was arrested for allegedly walking through the crime scene while recording on his phone and ignoring police warnings. He faces charges of disturbing the peace and interfering with a police officer and will be arraigned in Dorchester District Court.
Witness accounts indicate the neighborhood is shaken by the incident. One resident described it as overwhelming, saying, “It was like the car was speeding down out of control.”
