Two Men Die in ATV Crash in Custer County, S.D.
CUSTER COUNTY, S.D. — Two men were killed in a single-vehicle ATV crash on Monday, September 1, 2025, around 5:40 p.m. on Flynn Creek Road, approximately seven miles south of Custer.
According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, Curtis Shawn Molone, 60, of Long Pine, Nebraska, was driving a 2023 Can-Am Maverick Side-by-Side southbound when he failed to negotiate a curve. The vehicle slid sideways on the gravel road, veered into the east side ditch, and struck a tree.
Authorities reported that both Molone and his passenger, 41-year-old Shawn Lee Malone from Ainsworth, Nebraska, were pronounced dead at the scene. Despite wearing seat belts, neither man was wearing a helmet during the incident.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. All details released are considered preliminary.
