CHILDRESS, Texas (KVII) — A Texas state trooper was killed in a crash during an attempted traffic stop on US-287 near Childress on Wednesday evening.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Trooper Sergio Romero, 27, initiated the traffic stop around 4:00 p.m. when a truck-tractor semi-trailer pulled in front of him. This action resulted in a collision between the trooper's patrol unit and the semi-trailer. Trooper Romero was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities reported that Trooper Romero had previously served with the Hall County Sheriff's Office before joining the Texas Department of Public Safety in 2025. He was stationed in Childress.
Trooper Romero is survived by his wife and two young sons.
