B-52 Stratofortress Crash Claims Eight Lives at Edwards Air Force Base
EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, CA — A B-52 Stratofortress crashed shortly after takeoff during a test mission at Edwards Air Force Base on Monday at approximately 11:20 a.m., resulting in eight fatalities, according to military officials.
The aircraft, which had eight individuals onboard—military personnel, government civilians, and contractors—burst into flames upon crashing at the remote base located about 100 miles north of Los Angeles. Emergency response teams are on scene, and efforts are underway to account for all personnel involved.
Colonel James Hayes, deputy commander of the 412th Test Wing, stated, “We lost eight great Americans.” The Boeing Company confirmed that two of its employees were among those who died in the incident. Families of the deceased are being notified, officials said.
Footage from the scene captured black smoke rising as the airfield was closed, with all inbound flights diverted. Details surrounding the cause of the crash remain under investigation, and authorities indicated that determining the specific factors may take months.
Initial reports suggested that the aircraft made a sharp right turn before descending at a rapid rate. Further information regarding the identities of those on board has not yet been released.
