NORTHGLENN, CO — A drunken driving crash late on May 28 resulted in the death of 18-year-old Paige Mahone.
Authorities said the incident occurred around 11:50 p.m. when Northglenn police noticed a vehicle having difficulty maintaining its lane southbound on Washington Street. The driver, identified as 18-year-old Angelo Arias, was observed swerving between lanes before pulling over in the 10500 block of Clarkson Street.
According to the arrest affidavit, Arias sped away from officers, reaching speeds of approximately 60 mph in a 25 mph zone. Witnesses reported hearing tires screech and a loud bang shortly after Arias accelerated.
Investigators stated that Arias lost control and crashed into a house located at 10400 Clarkson Street, with “no sign of braking” at the scene. His vehicle came to rest pinned against the home's brick wall, having collided with a gas meter.
Arias was found approximately 5 feet from the driver's side door, and officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. He later admitted to consuming several shots of liquor and smoking marijuana prior to the crash.
Mahone was discovered unconscious in the passenger floor area and was transported to the hospital, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
A search of Arias' vehicle revealed marijuana paraphernalia and an empty liquor bottle. He now faces two vehicular homicide charges—one for DUI and one for reckless driving. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 23 in Adams County Court.
