COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — One man is dead following a collision between a pickup truck and a semi-truck on I-29 northbound Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 5 p.m. near 25th Street, according to the Iowa State Patrol. A crash report states that the semi-truck, traveling north, struck the stationary pickup truck in the right lane. The reason for the pickup's immobility remains unclear.
The driver of the pickup, 60-year-old Donald Marks, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the semi-truck sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital; the semi-truck driver was not injured.
Video footage from KCCI sister station KETV shows at least one vehicle involved appeared to have caught fire. I-29 northbound has reopened between the North 16th Street exit and the County Road G37 exit.
According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, 102 fatalities have been recorded on Iowa roadways in 2023, which is an increase of 17 compared to the same period in 2022. The average annual death toll over the past five years is 337. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
