Driver killed, another injured in wrong-way crash on Route 16.

MILTON, N.H. — A head-on crash on Route 16 early Friday morning resulted in one fatality and serious injuries to another driver.

Edward Correia, 77, of Portsmouth, was at the scene shortly after the collision occurred at around 4:30 a.m. The second driver, a 67-year-old man from West Ossipee, was transported to a hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

According to the New Hampshire State Police, Correia's vehicle was traveling north in the southbound lanes before the crash. Reports of a vehicle driving against traffic were received three minutes prior to the incident.

The accident took place in a section of Route 16 without median barriers, and authorities are investigating the reasons for Correia's vehicle crossing into oncoming traffic.

Investigators believe he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The stretch of Route 16 between Exits 17 and 18 was closed for approximately three hours as emergency response teams worked at the scene.
