SARASOTA, Fla. — A woman survived a rollover crash after hitting a nearly 9-foot alligator early Sunday morning on April 9.
The incident occurred around 6 a.m. at the intersection of Fruitville Road and Cowpen Lane in Sarasota County. Maslin Kurtz, 27, of Manatee County, was driving a Toyota 4Runner when the collision took place.
According to witnesses, Kurtz lost control of her vehicle after striking the alligator, crashing into a nearby pole. She reported feeling crushed between the roof and steering wheel.
A couple witnessed the accident and called 911 for assistance. Emergency responders transported Kurtz to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where she spent four days, including two in the intensive care unit.
Hospital officials confirmed Kurtz sustained several fractures, including her spine, sternum, and left scapula. She will wear a brace for 4 to 6 weeks and will undergo physical therapy, but is expected to fully recover.
Authorities stated that the alligator did not survive the incident. Deputies assisted in removing the animal from the roadway.
A GoFundMe page has been established to help cover Kurtz's medical expenses, launched by a friend.
