LYNNFIELD, Mass. — A Massachusetts State Police trooper died early this morning following a wrong-way crash on Route 1.
Trooper Kevin Trainor, 30, was struck at approximately 2:00 a.m. by a Jeep driven by Hernan Marrero, 50, of Roslindale, while responding to reports of the wrong-way vehicle near the Saugus/Lynnfield line. Footage from a nearby dealership showed Marrero's vehicle speeding in the wrong direction moments before the collision.
Despite immediate transport to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Trainor was later pronounced dead. The Essex County District Attorney's Office confirmed Marrero as the driver of the wrong-way vehicle.
Authorities noted a discrepancy in video timestamps due to Daylight Saving Time adjustments, stating the incident sequence occurred earlier.
“Trooper Trainor saved lives this morning; his actions prevented a greater tragedy,” said Massachusetts State Police Col. Geoffrey Noble.
Trainor was a Danvers barracks officer who began his career as a corrections officer in Essex County and joined the State Police after graduating from the academy in 2023. He is survived by his mother, fiancée, and several siblings.
Emergency crews managed lane closures while investigating the scene, and the case remains under review.
