Trooper Killed Responding to Wrong-Way Driver on Route 1 in Lynnfield

(Lynnfield, MA) — A Massachusetts State Police trooper was killed in the line of duty early Wednesday while responding to a wrong-way driver on Route 1 in Lynnfield.

Authorities identified the trooper as 30-year-old Kevin Trainor, who was involved in a with a at approximately 2:04 a.m. The wrong-way driver, 50-year-old Hernan Marrero of Roslindale, also died in the crash.

Trooper Trainor, a three-year veteran of the Massachusetts State Police, had just received a 911 call moments after his shift was set to end at 2:00 a.m. He leaves behind his fiancée, mother, and four siblings. An officer who knew him, Colonel Geoffrey Noble, described Trainor as “the guy you wanted as your backup, not just on the job, but in his personal life too.”

A procession was held as Trainor's body was transported from Massachusetts General Hospital to the Medical Examiner's Office. Governor Maura Healey praised his heroism, stating, “If it weren't for his actions, there would be a lot of grieving families today.” Flags were ordered to half-staff in his honor.

The Essex County District Attorney's Office confirmed that investigations into the crash are ongoing, and lane closures were in effect during that time.

Trainor's name will be added to the Law Enforcement Memorial wall in a ceremony at the Massachusetts State House on Friday at 11 a.m.
