GREENBRIER COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS) — Crews are on-site to manage a diesel fuel spill resulting from a crash on Interstate 64 Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred around 6 a.m. in the westbound lanes near mile marker 174, following a tractor-trailer losing approximately 18 containers of diesel fuel, according to the Greenbrier County Sheriff's Office. Authorities estimate that around 4,000 gallons of diesel were spilled.
Emergency responders reported that some fuel reached storm drains and entered Howard's Creek. Efforts are underway to prevent further contamination of the Greenbrier River.
The Lewisburg Fire Department, White Sulphur Springs Volunteer Fire Department, and Fairlea EMS were dispatched to the scene. Additional support was requested from the West Virginia Department of Highways, West Virginia Department of Transportation, Greenbrier County Department of Homeland Security, and Evergreen for containment efforts.
Residents are advised to avoid the area to facilitate ongoing emergency operations.
