No charges will be filed in the fatal crash that claimed the life of Hamilton's fire chief.

HAMILTON, Mich. — No charges will be filed in connection with the fatal crash involving Hamilton Fire Chief David Haverdink, according to the Allegan County Sheriff's Office.

The incident occurred on M-40 near 136th Avenue on December 23, 2025, as Haverdink responded to a medical emergency. The 74-year-old chief was struck by a passing vehicle and was transported to the hospital, where he died two days later on Christmas Day.

Investigators from the Allegan County Crash Reconstruction Team concluded their inquiry in consultation with the prosecutor's office, determining that no charges would be pursued against the driver involved.

Haverdink dedicated 51 years to the Hamilton Fire Department, serving as chief for 40 years. He was also elected sheriff of Allegan County twice during his career.

The veteran chief was laid to rest on January 6.
