MASHPEE, MA—A school bus crash on Monday morning left a driver and one student injured.
At approximately 8:40 a.m., a Mashpee Public Schools bus carrying 26 students ages six to 12 crashed into a tree near Old Barnstable Road and Leather Leaf Lane. Authorities reported that the driver may have suffered a medical episode prior to the accident.
The bus was en route to Quashnet Intermediate School and Kenneth C. Coombs School when the incident occurred. Responding officers found the bus off the eastbound side of the roadway after it struck the tree.
A total of two individuals, the driver and one student, were transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Neither was reported to have sustained serious injuries, according to school officials. The remaining students were assessed at the scene by emergency personnel and later released to family members or neighbors with parental consent.
The Mashpee Police Department is conducting an investigation, including an accident reconstruction.
“We are very thankful that no one was seriously injured,” said School Superintendent Michele Conners. “Our thoughts are with the driver, who has been a valued member of our transportation team.”
Counselors and support staff will be available for students needing assistance following the incident.
