OKLAHOMA CITY (KOKH) — A tragic accident on I-35 claimed the lives of three individuals, including an Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper, on Wednesday around noon.
Emergency crews responded to a crash in the northbound lanes of I-35, between Britton Rd. and Hefner Rd. According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, debris fell from a southbound vehicle, causing a small SUV to swerve across the cable barrier into oncoming traffic.
The SUV struck Trooper Vernon Brake and two other occupants—a woman and a 4-year-old child—all of whom were pronounced dead at the scene. Trooper Brake, who served nearly 20 years, leaves behind a wife and two daughters.
Authorities confirmed that the incident is under investigation, and traffic was significantly impacted as lanes were closed for cleanup and examination. Towing services were also dispatched to clear the wreckage.
The Oklahoma Department of Corrections, along with various law enforcement agencies, expressed condolences for the families affected. “When we lose one of our own in public service, it is felt across the entire public safety community,” a statement read.
Governor Kevin Stitt, along with local officials, shared their condolences and praised Trooper Brake's dedication to public safety. Community members are rallying in grief and support for the families of all three victims.
Further details will be released as the investigation continues.
