14-Year-Old Driving Under the Influence Causes Fatal Crash, Killing Baby.

HAMPTON, Va. (WKRC) — A DUI crash in Hampton resulted in the death of a 1-year-old boy, according to Virginia State Police.

The incident occurred early Monday morning on I-64 when a 14-year-old girl, driving under the influence, veered off the roadway, struck a guardrail, and collided with a lane barrier. The boy, identified as Ma'Khai, was not properly restrained and sustained serious injuries; he died on Thursday.

Authorities informed that the child's mother, the 14-year-old driver, was also unrestrained and taken to the hospital with serious injuries. She currently faces charges for driving under the influence, driving without a license, and a child restraint violation, with additional charges possibly forthcoming.

The boy's grandmother, April Logan, shared her grief and frustration, stating that her son, Ma'Khai's father, is 17 years old. “I can't hate Ma'Khai's mother. My spirit won't let me,” she said.

Family members noted that Ma'Khai was set to celebrate his second birthday on April 4.
