Semitrailer Fire Halts Traffic on Eastbound I-70 Near Loma

A semitrailer fire closed eastbound Interstate 70 Thursday morning near Loma, Colorado, according to authorities.

The Colorado State Patrol responded to the incident at 6:20 a.m. at mile post 9. Reports indicate that a tire fire spread quickly, engulfing the cab and trailer, which was carrying dried cherries and chocolate. The 35-year-old male driver was not injured.

Eastbound I-70 was closed between Exit 2 for Rabbit Valley and Exit 11 for U.S. 6 around 6:30 a.m. Loma is approximately 18 miles northwest of Grand Junction.

As of 4:40 p.m., the right lane of eastbound I-70 reopened, while the left lane was cleared by 9:18 a.m., according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Emergency services are continuing to monitor the situation, and further investigations are ongoing.
