CHARLESTON, SC — A 77-year-old man has been charged in a fatal incident on January 6, 2023, involving a bicyclist on a lower Ashley River bridge.

Sherif Mahmoud, 36, was struck around 7 p.m. while riding his electric bike. He was transported to a local hospital but did not survive. Mahmoud, originally from Egypt, was in the U.S. to provide for his family and is survived by his wife and two small children, according to police.

Authorities reported that the suspect vehicle was last seen heading down the Lockwood Drive exit ramp toward Bee Street. Investigators from Charleston's Major Accident Investigation Team utilized witness accounts and debris found at the scene to identify a black Lincoln SUV as the vehicle involved in the crash.

Lawrence Michael Daley was arrested on February 26 and charged with involvement in a hit-and-run resulting in death. He was released the following day after posting a $100,000 bond.
